which one is more important?

i have been thinking a lot. thinking about everything and anything. today my thoughts have revolved around spiritual and physical health.

honestly, i have neglected both in the past while. discipline is not a strong suit for me. unless i have exterior accountability i wont do it….but i have been thinking about the importance of both spiritual and physical health.

the bible says that you are to be “ready in season and out of season” meaning i should have spent time in the word. i need to be spending more time and focusing on my spiritual health.

and i have not worked out since i graduated 24/7 in 2006. i need to. i have not gained weight, but i am not healthy. i know it. i feel it.

so here is the question i pose to you….which is first that i need to work on.

physical or spiritual?

  1. Lynse, you should place spiritual fitness as your first priority. 1 Timothy 4:7-8 says:

“But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”

  2. it comes first spiritually.. ;)
“Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.”
    Proverbs 3:13

  3. So now it becomes a matter of doing it.

    Thanks! any more thoughts?

  4. I’m struggling with the same two things. The motivation is hard to find. Which is why the spiritual disciplines are called disciplines not hobbies. I have to make both, spiritual and physical exercise, a habit. If I wait until I “feel” like doing it, it happens rarely.

  5. i totally agree. I will never “feel” like doing it. because i want to sleep in, i want to make plans at night.

it is hard for me to shut off and realize that the world will continue to go about its business if i cut out for a bit and take some time.

it is hard, because being in ministry i need to be filled and church alone doesnt do that.

    Is there a solution?

  6. How’s about keeping a bicycle at work, and a couple of times a week, instead of lunch, go ride 5 miles? I love to bicycle. Going to a gym seems like a chore, but biking feels like I’m acting like a kid. I try to do 20-30 miles a week. It’s not nearly as tough as it sounds, and it’s all the exercise I need.

It’s not a bad spiritual exercise either: the wind, the sun, the fragrance of flowers, the colors. Immersion in God’s glory, eh?

  7. Usually when I do one, I find the other one comes naturally. When I’m “disciplined” in one area, it spills into my other parts of life. Just me…

  8. Lynse,
I ran across your site from an email you sent last week to everyone (in choir) and read your blog today.
For me (physical or spiritual) I am taking care of both simultaneouly. I went through a severe attack by the enemy (the past couple of years) which resulted in a divorce (unfortunately lead her to follow an alternate life-style) that brought on some serious spiritual warfare to battle and as a result blood pressure increased and as I’ve mentioned also pushed me to ultimately bring myself to a place in my life that I knew I could not & would not let this overtake me….. So, I joined the gym and started and could only do about 5 minutes of cardio before I was completely winded. Anyway as I would grow physically I would often have these moments to where the Holy Spirit was telling me to use the same concept of working out physically to help me grow spiritually….. Just as diligent as I would be physically I would work toward the spiritual side of things also. Just as I am not perfect physically, but a work in progress, I am parallel in that aspect spiritually and learning to work those muscles/spirit man and train the muscles/spirit man to be diligent in what I do (to the best of my ability). Just as I eat healthy I also try to take in things that are healthy for my spirit as well…… “HOPE THAT MADE SENSE!”

Thanks and have a great day…. I appreciate everything you do!

    Be Blessed…….

  9. Ohamanda,

you are probably right. if i got my spiritual life back in shape i think that the desire to take care of my body would follow.

so now it is a matter of getting up in the morning….there is the issue. will i? i set my alarm for 6:30 to do it this morning and snoozed til 7:30.

  10. Montysano,

the bike at work would be smart. it would also help financially too. i live about 7 minutes in car from work. that is actually a great idea!!

    thanks for the thoughts!

  11. Because I’m a notorious multi-tasker, I would say do both. I use my running time for prayer time. It’s always a great way for me to connect with God while also getting exercise. Ultimately, though I have found that if I put time for spiritual growth first, I always seem to have more time for the other things that I need to get done.

  12. Hi Lynse,

Saw your post on the main page and it peaked my interest. That’s a great question and one that I think many struggle with. Wanted to share another perspective (to add to all of the other great responses above). This one goes along the line of both, but rather than looking at it as doing both (separately) at the same time, find the interconnectedness between the two and do them simultaneously. Something my brother-in-law and I do is use our workouts as the physical manifestation of the spiritual process we are each going thru. And so the type of physical exercises we do tends to reflect and invigorate the full spectrum of the path we walk, attending to all needs at the same time.

What’s cool is if we get stuck in a particular spot, say on the mental plane, then we can come at it thru the workout, thereby assisting us to come to the solution from a different angle. And this more often than not jars something loose spiritually and emotionally as well. This can occur in many other combinations as well.

All the best in your search for that balance, you’ll find it :)
